Dyeing Easter Eggs with Food

Happy Easter lovies! I love getting crafty and it’s even more fun now that I have a partner in crime to get messy with …Evan! Any other year I would have gone to my garage and spray painted my Easter eggs a rainbow of pastel hues. However, since having Evan I’ve been more mindful of my crafting and have made an effort to keep things as natural and eco-friendly as possible.

This year I decided to skip the spray paint and food colouring in lieu of some fresh, organic ingredients to decorate our eggs with …fruits and veggies! I saw these eggs on Pinterest the other week and decided I had to give them a whirl. Here are step-by-step instructions to help you create a basket of beautiful, colourful Easter eggs right from your own kitchen!

Easter Egg Colour & Measurement Guide

  • Beets (2 cups) – pink
  • Red Onion Skin* (2 onions recommended but can use as little as 1/2 onion skin) – dusty pink/ brown
  • Turmeric* (3 tbsp) – Gold
  • Turmeric (3 tbsp) – Pale Yellow
  • Purple Cabbage (2-3 cups) – Blue
  • Yellow Onion* (2 onions is recommended but can use as little as 1/2 onion skin) – Light orange
  • Black Coffee (2 cups) – Light brown

*add eggs to boiling water mixture.

Note – for a salmon colour, leave the egg in the turmeric (room temperature) mixture for 30 minutes, then dip in the beet mixture for 30 minutes.

I unfortunately didn’t have all the above ingredients (would have loved to try the cabbage), and didn’t think it was smart to send Nitin to the store just for these few things. I used beets, tumeric and red onion to create my colours. If you only have a few ingredients, vary the time you leave the egg in the mixture if you want a range of different shades.

Instructions

  1. Add ingredient of choice (see above for measurements) to a pot with 4 cups of water.
  2. Add 2 tbsp of vinegar and bring to a boil.
  3. Let mixture boil for 30 minutes.
  4. Using a sieve, pour mixture into a bowl or mason jar.
  5. If ingredient is marked with an asterisk in the guide above, dunk egg into the mixture of boiling water. If the ingredient is not marked with an asterisk, leave the mixture to sit out until it reaches room temperature, then apply the eggs.
  6. Let the eggs sit for at least 30 minutes. The longer you leave the eggs in the mixture the deeper the colour.
Pale yellow egg (turmeric room temp), dusty pink (red onion), soft pink (beets), salmon (turmeric and beets), darker yellow egg (turmeric boiling water).
