Black-Owned Businesses in the GTA

I’ve been spending a lot of time listening, learning and reflecting the past few days. As a person of colour I’ve always felt a sense of pride when I see a visible minority breaking down barriers and making history. A hard truth I realized this week is that my “sense of pride” is the least actionable thing I could possibly do to support the black community, and while I understand the struggles of all visible minorities are important, that is not what this is about. It is not the same.

I’ve seen a lot of people post about their white privilege and how they can do better. But it wasn’t until I started doing my own research, watching videos, reading articles and truly educating myself that I realized how little I have done to fight this unfair system and support my fellow brothers and sisters. We are not fighting an even race out there, and I am so disappointed and ashamed at my lack of support to the black community. Do I shop at black-owned businesses? Of course! Do I make an effort to ensure my shopping habits and posts include a truly diverse range of brands? No, and I will do better. I am making an effort to support and share black businesses …not just today, this month or this year, but for as long as you’ll all listen. I will use my voice and my platform to bring awareness to these issues because I have failed here. What scares me the most is that when the spotlight shines on something else things will slowly return to the way they are, and that cannot happen. We can no longer be silent. We need to have tough conversations, educate our children, teach them about privilege and racism. We have to do better.

As the start of this promise to do better I’ve rounded up some incredible black-owned businesses right here in the GTA that I will start supporting. Thank you to my amazing friends in the black community for sharing your finds with me and teaching me more this week then I have learnt in a lifetime.
