DIY Unicorn Ornaments

Happy holidays lovies! I surprise myself sometimes with the lack of DIY projects I put on the blog, as I love creating things from scratch (more to come next year, promise!). This year I fell in love with the idea of creating a unicorn ornament, and I’m pumped to share this fairly easy DIY project with you guys.

WHAT YOU NEED

  1. Ornaments – I searched high and low for white, sparkly ornament balls this year and I couldn’t find the size I was looking for anywhere. Sooo when desperate times call for desperate measures, make your own! I picked up a 25 piece pack of ArtMinds Handmade Ornaments at Michaels and they were perfect. Make sure you don’t get too small of a size or it becomes difficult to fit the ears, horn and flowers.
  2. Pine-Sol – Weird, I know! I was just as shocked as you probably are reading this when I discovered I needed Pine-Sol for my DIY ornaments.
  3. Baking Clay –  The clay is used to make the unicorn horn, and while there are a number of beautiful colour options to choose from I used Yellow Gold Glitter for all my ornaments. One of my favourite baking clays is the Premo! Sculpey Accents Oven-Bake Clay from Michaels. I was originally going to spray paint the horns different colours but as they don’t have a sturdy base to rest on it was difficult to get an even spray paint on them.
  4. Sparkles – These are used to fill the ornaments. I initially purchased Creatology Glitter in Snow but I wasn’t overly impressed with the colour as it looked more foggy than clear. I picked up pink and blue sparkles in the same brand which turned out much better than the snow shade. Since the white, shimmery ornament look didn’t pan out as expected, I opted to go with sparkly gold. The Extra Fine Glitter by Recollections was perfect and if they had white available I would have picked that up for the rest of the ornaments.
  5. Felt – You will need one stiff felt sheet in white (or more depending on how many ornaments you plan on making), and one soft felt sheet in baby pink.
  6. Flowers – I used the Jewel Flower Embellishments by Recollections. I picked up three packs of the pink/ purple, one pack of blue and one back of yellow, I ended up using primarily the smaller flowers only.
  7. Sharpie – Medium tip.
  8. Eyelash Stencil – Take a piece of paper (I used a stiffer flyer I received in the mail) and cut a tiny semi-circle from the top.
  9. Hot Glue Gun  (with sticks) – If you don’t have glue gun you can pick one up from Dollarama for around $2.

TIP – If you’re picking up anything from Michaels, remember to use their 40% off coupon (to be used on one regular-priced item). I am signed up for their newsletter because they often have 55% off coupons as well.

HOW TO DECORATE

  1. Before you’re ready to create your ornaments you need to make the horns. This is the longest part of the process because it requires the horns to bake in the oven for 20 – 30 minutes. Using an over-bake clay, create two strips of clay with one side being larger than the other. Twist the two pieces of clay together, ensuring one side remains wider (the base of the horn) and one is more narrow (the tip of the horn). Put on a baking sheet and pop in the over for 20 – 30 minutes (temperature and cook time may vary by brand). Once the horns are baked, remove from the oven to cool off.
  2. Carefully remove the ornament cap and place to the side.
  3. Pour a small amount of Pinesol into the ornament and swirl it around making sure to cover the entire inside. Drain the remaining Pinesol; this is an important step because if you leave a pool of Pinesol at the bottom it’s going to cause the glitter to start becoming chunky. I leave my ornaments upside down in the sink to make sure all the Pinesol is drained before adding my glitter.
  4. Pour the glitter into the ornament. I recommend doing this over a bowl to avoid the glitter from spilling everywhere. Swirl the glitter around until the inside of the ornament is covered. The great thing about this ornaments is that the glitter is on the inside so it doesn’t make a mess. You can also mix and match glitter colours to create your own unique looks.
  5. Take the stiff white felt and cut out the shape of unicorn ears. You can google a template, or free-hand them. Once the larger white shape is cut out, take the soft pink felt and cut out the inner ear. Using the glue gun, adhere the pink felt on top of the white felt.
  6. Once the inside of the ornament is dry, apply the ornament cap back on. I like doing this before I apply the ears and the horn to ensure the cap will still fit.
  7. Put glue on the base of the ear and apply to each side of the ornament cap.
  8. Take your horn and using the glue gun put it between the ears, just under the ornament cap.
  9. Take your flowers and start covering the area around the horn. You can use as many or as few flowers as you wish. I preferred the look of the smaller flowers only, but I did add a few medium sized ones when I was running low on the smaller guys.
  10. Take your eyelash stencil, and using your Sharpie draw eyelashes onto the ornament under the flowers. Remember, each ornament is meant to be different and unique so don’t sweat it if your ears and eyes aren’t the same size on every piece.
  11. If you are gift giving your ornaments, for an added touch put the recipients name on the back using the sharpie.

I hope your tree just got a whole lot more fun! Wishing you and your families and bright & magical holiday season!

xo, Kiki

Hi Beth. I used plastic but it shouldn’t make a difference. Good luck!
