I’m teaming up with Wayfair to bring you The Spring Edit, a collection of advice, inspiration, trends, and product picks for the upcoming season. I’m super excited to share with you guys my tips & tricks for a smooth spring organizing experience.

Throughout this pandemic it feels like despite my best efforts my house is in constant disarray, and let me tell you, spring cleaning couldn’t come fast enough this year! It wasn’t until this last year did I know what it was like to really live in my home, and when I say live, I mean really live. I discovered comfort in the quaintest of nooks, found ways to make my space more useful, arranged and rearranged and arranged some more, and for the first time since I can remember my house was filled with toys and clutter and crafts galore. And truthfully speaking, it felt so good. But it’s been a year now and with spring upon us it’s high time we talk about tidying things up and creating a fresh, squeaky clean start for the new season!

The Wayfair Spring Edit Q & A with Kiki Khosla

Wayfair: Spring cleaning is basically an annual tradition for most people. What is the first thing you suggest to people who ask your advice on how to start getting organized?

Kiki: Spring cleaning can feel a bit overwhelming so I recommend starting with one room at a time. Have bags ready for donations/selling so you can quickly and easily toss in items that no longer “spark joy”. I find that without a donation bag most of the items end up back in my drawers so getting them out while I can is always important. Did you know that studies show having a disorganized home increases stress levels?

Blocking off time and creating a schedule are also helpful at keeping you accountable. I don’t know about you guys but my spring cleaning always takes longer than I anticipate. I like blocking off an entire morning or afternoon at a time (not always possible to do an entire day with Evan) and going through a checklist of tasks.

Wayfair: What are the top three spaces in a home that typically require the most organization?

Kiki: If I had to narrow it down I would say closets, kitchen and play area for the littles …and not necessary in that order. These are three of the most used spaces in a lot of homes and the constant traffic often leads to …well, a mess!

This year feels more important than ever to sort through and organize our closets. Many items have likely hung untouched for 365+ days and if you have no plans of wearing them in the near future it’s probably time to part ways. For those special pieces, I recommend folding neatly into a storage container and tucking them under the bed.

People have been spending a lot more time at home and while this may be great for family time, your kitchen cupboards may have another story to tell. Take the time to create a system within your kitchen. I’m a huge fan of clear storage containers for pasta, cereals, etc and ensuring everything has a home.

As for kids play areas, these spaces are often most in need of some TLC. When it comes to Evan’s two play areas I go by the theory that less is more. I don’t like large storage containers where toys can get lost, instead I recommend getting a bookcase where toys can be put on display and are easily accessible. This way, all toys are visible to your littles, it creates less clutter and clean-up is a breeze. I also recommend investing in a few extra clear storage containers which you can use for storing smaller items and creating sensory bin for kids.

Wayfair: Moving on to design aesthetics, which color palettes are speaking to you this season?

Kiki: I don’t know if it’s all the time spent outdoors but I am gravitating toward a lot of earthy tones this season. I find they create a soft, calming space but still leave room for playfulness with colours and patterns. I’ve been pulling in ivory and tan shades and accenting with muted blues, greens and peach tones. Nature is my biggest inspiration this season and the one colour I can’t resist is pistachio. Not only is colour calming and cozy but it’s known to harmonize the energy of your home.

Wayfair: Are there any interior design trends that are really standing out to you right now?

Kiki: I’m loving the granny chic trend lately. As someone who enjoys mixing new pieces with vintage finds this style is right up my alley. The great thing about this trend is that you don’t have to go all-in. From florals and frames to hand-knit textiles and light fixtures, channel your inner granny as fill your space with charming, cozy pieces, little by little.

Affordable Spring Bedroom and Closet Refresh

Refreshing your bedroom and closet on a budget is easier than you may think. First, let’s talk storage. When it comes to tackling your clothes I recommend storage bins so you can neatly store your seasonal pieces either under your bed or in your closet. These bins are also great for housing accessories (seasonal and other), shoes and sentimental items. I personally prefer clear storage bins so I can see what’s inside, but regardless of your preference these are a must-have when it comes to bedroom organization.

If you’re fighting for space, make the most of your precious night table real estate by mounting your bedside lighting to the wall. I also recommend adding mirrors to help your bedroom feel brighter and really open up the space.

Updating your bedding and adding new throw pillows are always quick, easy and cost effective ways to freshen up a space. Faux greenery, floral wall art and a light, colourful throw are some of my favourite ways to add a touch of spring without breaking the bank.
